Where it all starts

High in the eastern portion of the Great Rift Valley comes another masterpiece of cultivation and processing. Poroto is named after the nearby mountain ranges that make this region famous. This is a bold and flavor packed coffee that delivers balance, mild sweetness, and subtle fruit notes. Grown and processed on one of the oldest and sustainability-focused farms in Tanzania , we were excited to bring this amazing coffee to the Black Circle community.

Why this coffee was selected

We chose this coffee because of its rich and distinct flavor which highlights the unique characteristics of the bourbon varietal. Hailing from the 130 hectare Utengule Estate, one of the premier growers in the region, this coffee is a masterclass of cultivation and processing methods. The beans once harvested at peak ripeness are then slowly and carefully dried to achieve the perfect moisture levels before making their way to the roaster. The perfect of sweetness combined with balanced fruit notes make this a standout you have to try!

Origin

This fantastic coffee comes from the Mbeya area of Tanzania. Volcanic mountain soil, cool winter temperatures and heavy winter rains combine to develop a rich and distinct flavor. This single-farm coffee is bold and reflects the best of what Tanzania has to offer.

What makes it worth it

This coffee comes from the bourbon varietal, one of the premier coffee varieties in the world. It is well balanced and has a unique flavor profile combining a mild sweetness with notes of fruit and traces of grape. Initial cupping notes even included hints of a red wine characteristic. While versatile in various formats, this coffee is a standout as a pourover due to its perfect body, mouthfeel and its delicate flavor profile. If you have not tried Tanzanian coffee before, this is a fantastic place to start!

The people behind it

The Fassler Family has owned and operated this farm for the past 40 years bringing updated processing methods and decades of coffee expertise to Utengule Estates. In addition to growing amazing coffees, they are also very active in supporting their local community by supporting schools and helping to provide access to clean fresh water in the area. Utengule also proudly practices biodiverse conservation methods on the farm and is working hard to ensure the farm will support cultivation for generations to come.

Roaster's Notes

This dark roast is roasty and has a hint of sweetness without taking it too far and losing the quality of this amazing coffee. My preferred method for Poroto is an espresso. It is fantastic on its own but is also great in lattes or other dairy formats. It also makes a really nice and toasty cold brew if you prefer. For the real coffee nerds out there, pair alongside our Yirgacheffe and/or RIft Valley to see how coffees from a similar region can have very unique and distinct flavor profiles.
