Where it all starts

This coffee really knocked our socks off. Nicaragua is not a region you hear much about in mainstream coffee circles, but this coffee is AWESOME. It comes from Finca La Bastilla in the Jinotega region and just a delicate light roast brought out interesting notes of chocolate, vanilla and hibiscus or subtle floral notes. This farm yields many interesting micro lots and this coffee highlights the attention to detail and fermentation process that clearly is focused on quality over quantity. This is definitely at the top light roasts we've ever curated!

Why this coffee was selected

Jinotega Unplugged was chosen first because of its flavor. We started with a medium profile and kept working our way lighter and lighter and we fell in love with test #6. The natural flavors in this bean were so good we agreed it should stay as light as possible. Second, the producer is innovative and show a clear attention to quality and detail. If you normally steer clear from light roasts, this may be the one to change your mind!

This coffee comes from the Jinotega region of Nicaragua high up where the volcanic soils are perfect for coffee cultivation. The farm is located within a protected nature reserve and is certified by the Rainforest Alliance - a win win!

What makes it worth it

This coffee is a standout as a light roast. A gentle roast brings out a natural cocoa aroma but is as smooth and balanced a light roast that you will find. It is fantastic as a pour over but also makes a nice espresso. Grab this one while you can!

What makes it different

This is not your average light roast. None of the grassiness or citrus notes you might expect. Jinotega Unplugged is a smooth and flavorful coffee with hints of cocoa and vanilla. Nicaraguan coffee is often neglected in the craft coffee world, but this coffee loudly begs for a seat at the table and we highly recommend it!

The people behind it

Jinotega Unplugged comes to us from Finca La Bastilla. Here the farm is divided into numerous micro farms with each focusing on cultivating various interesting varietals and highlighting different altitudes and soil composition. They are certified by the Rainforest Alliance and continue to find sustainable methods to produce in a densely vegetated area of the Nicaraguan rainforest. We intentionally light roast this beautiful coffee to preserve its fantastic natural flavor and a hint of cocoa in the nose.

Roaster's Notes

This coffee is a really special light roast. The notes are vibrant yet subtle and come out well in a pour over. I also really like this as a straight espresso and the lightness of the roast combined with the notes of cocoa and vanilla deliver a truly unique light roast. This is a must try!
